I’ve been keeping track of how many ski areas I’ve been to for a while now. My father and sister are in on the competition, and so far I’m losing, despite years of ski racing in the Northeast where I visited tons of obscure little hills. I believe my father is at 109, my sister is at 84, and I’m down at 65.
My 64th and 65th were both picked up in the past week, 64 being a town-owned rope tow in Lincoln, NH and 65 being King Pine, a small independent hill in Madison, NH. King Pine has THREE triple chairs and a tiny rope tow. The terrain is varied, with plenty of easy slopes but also a few legit steep ones. They even have 2 trails rated as Double Black Diamonds ! Granted, these ratings are always relative. But this one was pretty darn steep!
I took my kids down it because it was their first “double diamond” trail, and the conditions were soft and forgiving, so I knew they’d have no trouble. And I was right! They killed it. So proud.
I don’t have a chance of catching my father, but it’s fun to try. My kids are at 9 already, which is outpacing their age. Maybe that’s a good goal for them, to stay ahead of their age for as long as possible.
Anyway, it was great to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful spring sun . Stay safe and stay sane out there, kids.

Hmm, I think my count is... 11. 12 if you count Sm uggler’s Notch, which I’ve been to, but didn’t ski at because despite being December 30th it was 60° and there was basically no snow (a friend who did ski described it as a lot of falling in puddles). Alternatively, 10 if you don’t let me count Canyons and Park City separately (they were separate when I went, but are now a single res ort). If been to five different resorts this winter though, including only one I had been to previously, so I’m branching out! I’ve also been to a hill that used to be a town owned slope, but hasn’t been operated since I think the ‘ 80s, and is today mostly a dog park.

My rule is you can count them as separate if they were separate when you went. That means you had to buy separate tickets, and probably went on different days. Or even if the ticket is shared, they can count as separate if you couldn’t ski between them. Like Aspen, Highlands, Snowmass, Buttermilk. Technically you can use the same ticket, but they are different mountains, so that’s 4. Snowbird/Alta are even connected these days, but I think they’d still count separately.

I think I’m at 28. Haven’t been going to many others lately though, I tend to stick to my pass and then go backcountry on trips

Rati ngs really are relative. This looks about the same steepness as big Emma at snowbird which was somehow a green until two years ago. They had to upgrade a few ratings once ikon and MTN collective folks started showing up. I converted my wife from boarding to skiing at the bird and it was rough when the progression goes from normal bunny hill to this kinda stuff with nothing in-between.

Let me see. . . carry the two. . . plus that one time. . .
The results are in! I have visited zero ski hills! Let me also count the number of states I’ve been in that could conceivably have natural ski hills in them . . . 1 state! Beat that!

Seriously, I think last time I was at Alta, it was basically easy = green, groomed = blue, ungroomed = black and there were no double blacks.

Yeah Alta has 10x as much beginner terrain as snowbird
